چکیده

The convulsant activity of pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) , is mainly due to' its ability to selectively antagonize GABA mediated post synaptic inhibition in the mammalian brain though a direct excitatory effect on neuronal membranes cannot be ruled out as a contributory factor (1). Furthermore there are reports which indicate that 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and norepinephrine (NE) playa modulatory role in the genesis of PTZ induced seizures since, diminishing the influence of 5-HT and NE in the brain exacerbates PTZ induced seizures while increasing their influence affords protection against PTZ induced convulsions (2,3,4,5,6,7).

Identification of Intracellular Sources Responsible for Endogenous Reactive Oxygen Species Formation

The endogenous reactive oxygen species ("ROS") formation is associated with many pathologic states such as inflammatory diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, brain and heart ischemic injuries, cancer, and aging. The purpose of this study was to investigate the endogenous sources for "ROS" formation in intact isolated rat hepatocytes, in particular, peroxisomal oxidases, monoamine oxidase, xanth...

Brain biogenic amine levels after methanol administration: possible mechanism of action on central monoaminergic neurons in discrete areas of brain in Wistar rat.

Alterations in the steady state level of rat brain biogenic amines - dopamine, nor-epinephrine, epinephrine, serotonin and 5-hydroxy indole acetic acid, in response to intraperitoneal administration of methanol (3g/kg b.w.) were studied in discrete areas of the rat brain. The monoamine changes induced by methanol were quite different from those induced by ethanol consumption. They were also reg...

Validation of the Zebra-fish Pentylene Tetrazol Seizure Model: Behaviour Assay for Assessing Anti-Epileptic Drug Efficacy

The availability of zebra-fish larvae model of epileptic seizure provides opportunities to identify novel anticonvulsants for treatment of people with epilepsy. However, the major parameters of zebra-fish behavior assay for assessing antiepileptic drug efficacy existed disparity, which resulted in different results in previous studies. In this study, we chose the high, medium, slow-speed moved ...

Afrri Sr74-9 May 1974 Afrri Scientific Report Morphine-induced Changes in the Activity of Enzymes Involved in Neurotransmitter Metabolism in Specific Brain Regions of the Tolerant Rat

The morphine-induced changes in the activity of enzymes involved in the metabolism of neurotransmitters in specific areas of the brain of rats made tolerant to morphine have been investigated. The activities of choline acetyl transferase (E.G.2.3.1.6.), acetylcholinesterase (E.C.3.1.1.7.) and monoamine oxidase (E.G. 1.4.3.4.) were determined in the hippocampus, thalamus, hypothalamus, cerebral ...
